At The Inn
Description
In 1886 the Union League Club, NYC, NY, acquired At the Inn, which now hangs outside the Mary Murray Room. The artist, Francis David Millet, was a first-class passenger lost in the sinking of the Titanic. Mr. Millet was a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in addition to being a renowned painter, and according to our 1887 annual report, Mr. Millet’s painting won first prize at the American Prize Fund Exhibition in May 1886. The “Jury of Award” presented At the Inn to the Union League Club in recognition of our support and promotion of American art.
The Union League Club was founded in 1863 by a group of concerned citizens to help preserve the Union, The Union League Club has built, over ensuing years, a record of distinguished service to our country. Many prominent civic, state, and national leaders have enjoyed the fellowship of the Club, including fifteen Presidents, seven Senators, many Congressmen, diplomats, cabinet members, and scores of chief executive officers of major corporations. These members include Theodore Roosevelt, who managed his early political career from the Club’s chambers, as well as J. Pierpont Morgan, John Jay, William Cullen Bryant, Chester A. Arthur, and Thomas Nast.

According to our 1887 annual report, Mr. Millet’s painting, At the Inn, won first prize at the American Prize Fund Exhibition in May 1886, awarded a prize of $2,000 for his picture. in the At the Inn was also in the Second Competitive Prize Fund Exhibition, New York, 1886.121.
