Stamped verso The F.D. Millet Sale.
There are two versions of this setting. Version 1, shown here, has the hanging brass pots overlapping and the basket by the chair is “round” and filled with different items than in Version 2, there is also a different arrangement of items in the glass door cupboard. It also does not have a red towel hanging on the wall on the left. For those who like to look at detail, please note the configuration of the the tiles which are different in both paintings.
This small oil is of a typical Flemish kitchen of the 19th century. Millet studied in Antwerp, Belgium at the Royal Academy in 1871-1872 and it is possible that it was painted at that time for one of Millet’s painting classes at the Academy.
Condition: Trimmed, canvas lined; wear at edges with corresponding minor inpainting.
